Who is it for? All Research Students

What will it cover? This development day has been designed for any research student, or early career researcher, who wishes to publish their research and improve their academic writing. The day will also feature a session on writing and publishing your own online research blog. All Development Days include lunch and refreshments and the opportunity for researchers to meet and chat with researchers from other disciplines.

Academic writing for Journals

Academic Writing for Journals is a hands-on workshop that offers participants opportunities for

• reviewing and assessing journal submissions
• generating and enhancing their own drafts
• peer-reviewing those drafts based on agreed criteria
• providing peer feedback for enhancement.

Participants are expected to bring samples of their own academic writing (early versions are perfectly appropriate) and a laptop. They will also be asked to carry out activities in preparation for the workshop.

.Blogging for Researchers

Mr Rob Farmer

This workshop will provide a brief introduction to academic blogging. We will consider reasons why researchers and academics might want to begin a blog, and will look at the most common technologies to support academic bloggers. Workshop participants will be introduced to MyPAD, which is the University of Northampton’s WordPress blogging platform. MyPAD is a safe and supported way to get started with a blog, and is free and private, but can be shared with individuals or with the wider world.

At the end of the session participants should: understand what a blog is, and how it differs from a website; have seen some examples of academic blogs; have a clear idea of the benefits and pitfalls of blogging; know how to get started with a MyPAD blog, and where to learn more about MyPAD.

Getting Published

Prof Ian Livingstone

This session introduces students and researchers to the process of academic publishing and will cover the publishing process, suggesting strategies to help you get published. By the end of the session you should understand how to choose which peer-reviewed journal to submit your work to and what will happen once your paper has been submitted.
